Reading Comprehension Activities: Learn by Reading

When learning another language reading activities can really help cement certain mechanics and usage of the language that's harder to learn just by speaking it. Some language learners realize that they can read and write a foreign language better than they can speak it, but as they practice writing and reading in the foreign language speaking it becomes easier. Some people can even visualize the language in writing in order to help them speak fluently. If you're struggling with a new language, use some of the activities mentioned below to help you improve your language skills.

Improve Conversation Skills through Reading

The main reason most people begin to learn a second language is so that they can have and understand conversations of native speakers. So practicing conversational language is important to improving skills and becoming fluent in the language. To practice holding a conversation, you need to team up with someone who is also learning the language or who is native in the language. Use different books, magazines, or newspapers to find stories and discuss them. Choose a story that interests both of you so that the conversation flows naturally and you aren't trying to think of something to talk about.

Create a question and answer session based on an interview in a magazine. Read an interview and then pretend to interview a friend and record the answers. This will help you practice asking questions and writing down the answers in the new language. You can even read a news article and then go back and forth asking and answering questions about the article.

Reading Activities for Vocabulary and Pronunciation

One of the best ways to learn a language is to study the vocabulary of the language and learn how to pronounce it correctly. A number of language learners feel that they've mastered a language, but when they speak to a native speaker the other person has trouble understanding what's being said. Choose a book and underline or highlight words that are unfamiliar to you. Use a dictionary to look up the word and fully understand the meaning. Use an online dictionary that includes a pronunciation option so that you can hear the word pronounced while looking at the definition. This will help you learn words that are unfamiliar and make sure that you're pronouncing words correctly.

Improve Listening Skills through Reading Exercises

One problem many language learners struggle with is being able to listen to the language being spoken and understanding what's said. When learning a language, we get used to hearing it spoken slowly and drawn out in order to help us grasp the words. But when speaking with a native speaker they will not speak slowly in order for you to understand. That's why it's important to be able to listen to the language being spoken fluently and at a normal pace in order to improve your skills.

Have someone read a short passage to you and verbally re-tell what they just read. You can also have someone type up a question sheet and then read you a short passage. Fill in the answers to the question sheet based on what you just listened to. By using a variety of reading activities you will improve your vocabulary, comprehension, fluency, and listening skills.
